In part 13 of Howard Ostroms essay series "Silent Sherlock" we are taken through the year 1916.

A significant year for the genre for many reasons - including the appearance of William Gillette's film role as Holmes.

Other entries would include
a canon adaption with "The Valley Of Fear" and the some what less canonical tale "The Mystery Of The Leaping Fish".

Today we continue the Silent Sherlock Series by Howard Ostrom with Part 10 which takes us through 1914.

This year would see Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s first published work, “A Study in Scarlet”,
find its first screen adaptation, not once but twice.

It would also be the year for the first animated Sherlock Holmes film, and the first all black cast Sherlock Holmes film, featuring a black Sherlock Holmes, both of which appeared on the same reel!
