Today we have a brand new essay in the "Diogenes Club Library" by Thomas Wheeler. "The London of Sherlock Holmes" was a presentation by Thomas at the 2014 meeting of the Southern Sherlockians in Chattanooga. Thomas has very graciously given his permission to have the accompanying notes on the website. While it is not a word for word recap, it is none the less informative and entertaining. It also contains links to a variety of maps and sites to further expand his subject points. Well worth a read for anyone with an interest in the geographic locations of Sherlock Holmes world. And for those wishing to delve EVEN further, I suggest checking out Thomas extensive e-book tomb of the same name here. You can download the essay below.

Today we have a brand new essay in "The Diogenes Club Library" by the illustrious Howard Ostrom. Did you know that in Russia, Sherlock Holmes is a favorite literary character for children and adults alike. This is largely thanks to the reruns of a television series starring Visaly Livanov as Sherlock Holmes and Vitaly Solomin as Dr. Watson, but they are far from the only Russian incarnation of the Detective and Doctor duo. This essay examines the full history of Watson and Holmes actors of the former Soviet state. You can download the essay below.
This week we have had autographed photos of the first black Sherlock Holmes and the first American Stage Sherlock Holmes, what could possibly top that? Well...how about the first ever film Sherlock Holmes - Gilbert M. Anderson! This is a rare and authentic typed letter signed by Gilbert M. Anderson aka Bronco Billy Anderson. It is dated December 5, 1959 and is to actor Gilbert Roland. Earlier that year Anderson was given a special Academy Award for lifetime achievement and sub-sequentially wrote back and forth with Roland who was a long time fan. In the letter Anderson describes his disdain for television but "when you get if free, you cannot look a gift horse in the mouth". Anderson's signature is rare, and this is the first letter I have ever seen. Mailing envelope and a used vintage post card from Essanny Pictures dated 1914 also are in the photo. At one time Anderson was the richest silent movie star, but the return address in this letter is the apartment where he lived out his days near poverty. We do realize this posting may cause some controversy, as some believe it is Maurice Costello who came first. But here at No Place Like Holmes we believe it to be Gilbert M.Anderson. You can read Howards essay "The Vitagraph Holmes" to learn more about the theory behind this. Another first for the "Howard Ostrom Holmes and Watson Autograph Collection" today with Ferris Hartman - the 1st ever American stage Sherlock Holmes. Hartman took to the stage as Holmes on 24th April 1899 in the play "The Man In The Moon" . Today we have a new very special stage addition in "The Howard Ostrom Holmes and Watson Autograph Collection" with the very first black Holmes and Watson adaption actors. "Bert A. Williams (1875 - 1922), born in Nassau, Bahamas, played a character named Shylock Homestead, called “Shy” by his friends, in the African-American stage musical “In Dahomey” (1903). Bert A. Williams was a key figure in the development of African-American entertainment, and the first black superstar. In an age when racial inequality and stereotyping were commonplace, he became the first black American to take a lead role on the Broadway stage, and did much to push back racial barriers during his career. Fellow vaudevillian W. C. Fields, who appeared in productions with Williams, described him as "the funniest man I ever saw – and the saddest man I ever knew." Williams had a partner named George W. Walker (1872 -1911). In “In Dahomey”, Walker portrayed slippery Rareback Pinkerton, opposite Williams’ Shylock “Shy” Homestead. Jas Obrecht adds, “Among my papers, I have an original program that was handed out during the opening week of In Dahomey. Beneath the cast listing, it describes ‘The Story of ‘In Dahomey’” as follows: ‘An old Southern negro, ‘Lightfoot’ by name, president of the Dahomey Colonization Society, loses a silver casket, which, to use his language, has a cat scratched on the back. He sends to Boston for detectives to search for the missing treasure. Shylock Homestead and Rareback Pinkerton (Williams and Walker), the detectives on the case, failing to find the casket in Gatorville, Fla., ‘Lightfoot’s’ home, accompany the colonists to Dahomey.” - Research and Article by Howard Ostrom. Why it is none other than the current "Doctor Who" Peter Capaldi! Capaldi played the role of Sherlock Holmes alongside Alexei Sayle as Watson in a sketch in an episode of "The All New Alexei Sayle Show" in 1994.
