Quiet Please!

"You have a grand gift of silence, Watson," said he. "It makes you quite
invaluable as a companion”.

Wise words from Mr.Holmes to his good doctor friend, but words that many incarnations of Sherlock Holmes would have been unable to utter.

Why? Because of the fact a rather large number of
Sherlock Holmes actors were from the silent film era, relying on words on screen and frantic piano hall incidental music to help illustrate and explain the story line.

But who were these Si-locks? What of the titles they appeared in? How did they come about?

Thankfully Howard Ostrom, with his impeccable extensive Sherlock Holmes media related knowledge, wont be remaining silent on the topic in the first part of his latest essay series "Silent Sherlock".

Now here is something that will put a spring in your step and a smile on your face this winter. New today in the Howard Ostrom Holmes and Watson Autograph Collection's television section it is Donny York - lead singer of Sha Na Na.

It was during an episode of "The Sha Na Na variety series" (1977-1981) that Donny became Sherlock Holmes for the purpose of a sketch. The title of the singing Sherlocks choice of tune? "Searchin" of course.

Today we have an interesting item in the misc section of the Howard Ostrom Collection.

Issue One of "Watson and Holmes" - a comic book signed by the writer Karl Bollers and the artist Rick Leonardi.

Watson and Holmes started its life as a kick-starter project that our Howard Ostrom personally donated too (and was given a special thanks mention as you can see below).

It follows the adventures of an African-American rendition of Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson.

The comic book series was also touched upon in Howard's excellent essay series "Voices In Darkness" which took a look at the past, present and future of African-American Holmes and Watsons across various medians.
