The production of the 1960s BBC series of Sherlock Holmes was notoriously problematic, with both Douglas Wilmer and Peter Cushing being openly critical of it. Often, Wilmer had to rewrite scripts himself to bring them up to scratch. Today I narrate his thoughts on what led to him having to do this for the episode 'The Devil's Foot'. With Parker Hanson as the voice of the stressed writer. Today I narrate Basil Rathbone's thoughts on the demise of the silent film era and which directors he felt managed to best handle the transition into the talkie era. This is taken from his autobiography, In and Out of Character. Today Parker Hanson narrates a little anecdote by Edward Hardwicke on a ritual Jeremy Brett developed during his most depressed times filming the Granada Sherlock Holmes TV Series. Also featuring Guy Grieve as the voice of Duncan Weldon. Today I narrate Basil Rathbone's thoughts on the actress Greta Garbo, who he starred alongside in the 1935 film 'Anna Karenina'. With the supremely talented Thea Solone as the voice of Ms. Garbo. Today I narrate an anecdote by Ian Richardson on the filming of the 1983 film, The Hound of The Baskervilles, in which he played Sherlock Holmes. Also featuring the voice talent of Michael Mengarda as the crew members. Today I narrate Christopher Lee's rather disparaging thoughts on the 1962 film, Sherlock Holmes and the Deadly Necklace, in which he played the role of Sherlock Holmes. ![]() Today we have a brand new essay written by Howard Ostrom. Father Brown is a short Catholic priest, the hero of the stories of the English writer of the first third of the twentieth century, Gilbert Keith Chesterton. It is a pity that he is not often remembered, and filmed even less often.” Certainly every character in literature has appeared on screens less often than Sherlock Holmes, but how often has Father Brown, and similar men of the cloth for that matter, made compelling and fascinating detectives? I would lean towards more often, so let’s take a look. The following men of the cloth all may be on the side of the angels, but don’t for one minute think they are not Sherlock Holmes. So we will present you with an ecumenical list of clerical mysteries presented on screens, any of which could be classified as a quasi Holmes production. ![]()
Today I narrate Christopher Plummer's thoughts on playing Sherlock Holmes in the 1979 film, Murder by Decree. Plummer had previously played the role in a 1977 episode of 'The Sunday Drama' TV show. Today I narrate Matt Frewer's thoughts on playing Sherlock Holmes. Frewer played the role in 4 TV movies between 2000-2002. The titles of the films were The Case of the Whitechapel Vampire, The Royal Scandal, The Sign of Four, and The Hound of the Baskervilles. |
