Silent Sherlock

Silent Sherlock Holmes films were all the rage from the 1900's to 1930. Here we catalouge all the ones we can find. Enjoy, but no talking about them afterwards. It is not allowed on this page.

Sherlock Holmes Baffled  (1900)
Sherlock Holmes Baffled is a short American silent film created in 1900 with cinematography by Arthur Marvin. It is the earliest known film to feature Arthur Conan Doyle's detective character Sherlock Holmes, albeit in a form unlike that of later screen incarnations. The inclusion of the character also makes it the first recorded detective film.

The Mystery Of The Leaping Fish (1916)
The Mystery of the Leaping Fish (1916) is a short film starring Douglas Fairbanks and Bessie Love.
The movie, written by D.W. Griffith, Tod Browning, and Anita Loos, displays a surreally lighthearted attitude toward cocaine and opium. Fairbanks otherwise lampoons Sherlock Holmes with checkered detective hat, coat, and even car, along with the aforementioned propensity for injecting cocaine whenever he feels momentarily down, then laughing with delight. In addition to observing visitors at his door on what appears to be a closed-circuit television referred to in the title cards as his "scientific periscope," a clock-like sign on the wall reminds him to choose between "EATS, DRINKS, SLEEPS, and DOPE"

Sherlock Holmes (1922)
Sherlock Holmes (released as Moriarty in the UK) is a 1922 American silent mystery drama film starring John Barrymore as Sherlock Holmes and Roland Young as Dr. John Watson.
The movie, which features the screen debuts of both William Powell (credited as William H. Powell) and Roland Young, was directed by Albert Parker and written by Earle Browne and Marion Fairfax from the 1899 play by William Gillette based upon Arthur Conan Doyle's characters, and was produced by Goldwyn Pictures Corporation.
