Dr. Watson famously notes that Holmes' knowledge of literature is 'Nil'. However, a closer examination of the stories brings this theory into question. In today's episode of The World of Sherlock Holmes, I reveal how the Sherlock-Shakespeare connection disproves this.

Today we have a new episode of The World of Sherlock Holmes. In today's episode, we take a quick at what The Diogenes Club is for starter Sherlock Holmes fans. Welcome to the first episode of my new series "The World of Sherlock Holmes". The aim of the show will be to provide bite size facts about all things Holmes, both from the original stories and from media iterations. In the first episode, we examine the origin of the phrase "Elementary, My Dear Watson" and why it is, sort of, incorrect to think that he said it. Today I narrate Clive Brook's thoughts on the 1932 film, "Sherlock Holmes", in which he played the role of Holmes. Today I narrate John Neville's thoughts on the filming process of A Study in Terror (1965) and his take on Sherlock Holmes. Today I narrate Peter Cushing's recollections on both his earliest memory of Sherlock Holmes & thoughts on the 1959 Hound of The Baskervilles film, in which he played the role of Sherlock Holmes. Abridged from the book, An Actor and a Rare One, by Tony Earnshaw. Today I narrate Douglas Wilmer's thoughts on Sir Alec Guinness, who he worked with on the 1964 film "The Fall of The Roman Empire". With special thanks to Lance Bulmer for voicing Sir Alec. Today I narrate Douglas Wilmer's thoughts on Charlton Heston, who he worked with on three feature films. Of note, for those unaware, Heston was a Sherlock himself, having played the role in the TV Movie "The Crucifer of Blood". With the additional voice talents of Russell Romano as Charlton Heston. Today I narrate John Barrymore's thoughts on Roland Young, the actor who played Watson to Barrymore's Sherlock in the 1922 feature film "Sherlock Holmes". The film is also known as Moriarty in certain circles. Today I narrate Arthur Wontner's thoughts on The Sleeping Cardinal, a 1931 film in which he played the role of Sherlock Holmes. |
