Sherlock Holmes was played by Walter Edwards (1870 - 1920) and Dr. Watson was played by Joseph Rawley. When playing in New York Edwards' Company was sued by Charles Frohman and William Gillette's Company for having Sherlock Holmes in large letters on the marquee and "The Sign of The Four" in small letters below it. The claim being it stole customers who thought it was Gillette's "Sherlock Holmes".
Edwards was made to change the sign. An interesting aside found in "The Sign of The Four" programs is the fact that Holmes' address is listed as 222 Baker Street in the play.
