James Ian Gray

Actor/Assistant Director Of Photography

About James

Picture
James Ian Grey is a professional freelance camera man and video editor and as well having done camera work on NPLH he plays Sherlock's elder brother Mycroft Holmes in the spin off " "The Mary Morstan Mysteries"

James is highly skilled in a vast array of camera models and editing packages as well as lighting and sound equipment and has had clients including the BBC, Lone Star Films and the Presenter Studios.
He also holds a Media Production BA(Hons) with The University of Lincoln.

Though James was more used to working behind the camera, he had  some theatre background from school so didn’t fear acting in the show and turned out to be a complete natural in the role of Mycroft playing it with an incredible, amusing and strong performance.

The Character

Picture
Mycroft is something of a mystery, not a huge amount is known about him.
Like Irene he is big part of the canon but only appeared in 2 of 60 stories "The Greek Interpreter" and "The Bruce Partington Plans" though referred to in a few more.He is 7 years Sherlock's Senior but it is known he is something of a human computer and holds an incredibly high position in the government, most polices that come out of British Law have first in some way been seen  and advised by him.
As Sherlock puts it in "Mycroft sometimes IS the British government"

However despite this, he is also very, very, very lazy and has little interest in doing any physical detection work himself and would go out of his way to disprove himself just so he wouldn’t have to act.
